The Data Center

My Own Personal 'Salt Mine'

I would rather point to my employer's web page, than write one myself, but since they had none, I was forced to do it for them.

They have since put up a page, but have asked that I not link to it. Suffice it to say that I work in the computer room at the main office of a major window manufacturer. Their main offices are located in Wausau, Wisconsin, which is where I work. There main manufacturing facilities are located just a few miles away, in Mosinee, Wisconsin. They are building new offices in Mosinee, and the Wausau offices are to be moved there. The sign outside the building at One Wausau Center reads "Available June 1, 1997" ... The writing is no longer on a proverbial wall.

I work as a console operator, but I am more of a printer operator. My job is to be eliminated just as soon as they complete the conversion from the current system, an IBM 3090 running MVS/ESA, and XBMS application software from Xerox. The new system, has changed several times over the last couple of years. Originally, the conversion was supposed to be completed over two years ago, but the new system was scrapped every time the head guy got canned. At least twice now they brought in some one new to figure out how to convert from the way we do business now, to anything else that will work. From my point of view, this has all been a really big joke, except for the fact that I am to be directly affected by the whims of those calling the shots. I've got an idea to save them a whole bunch of money, but I don't trust those directly above me in the chain of command. If only I knew who to tell.....

O.K., I broke down and suggested my ideas anyway. The idea that I alluded to above is quite simply, using the internet to let our regular customers enter there own orders instead of faxing them to us. By using forms, they will be responsible for the accuracy of the order, and we don't need someone to key it in to the system -- There I go, eliminating more jobs -- Even more money will be saved by instant, on-line, order acknowledgment; rather than faxing the acknowledgment over night. I did actually tell my new boss of about 6 months about this idea; but he didn't say much though because he doesn't know enough about the internet to know what I was talking about, and how easily it could be implemented -- But what do I know? I'm just an operator.

Besides, I am merely " Stating the Obvious" for those who know how to tap into the true power of the internet.
