December 19, 1996 update

I had a bit of fun last night at work, so I thought I'd pass along the story. Not really a big deal, but what can I say? I don't get out much.

Working nights can be pretty isolating, especially when you work the graveyard shift all by yourself. Once the cleaning crew shuts off the lights and goes home, I am left with only the AM/FM/8-track stereo system with one blown speaker to keep me company for the rest of the night.

Last night, Jeff Murray was giving away an old set of "cans," or headphones, on WIFC. He had broken them but promised to have them repaired before giving them to the winner. The deal was to call him with a "sob story," and the best sob story would win the phones.

Thinking "hey, I could use some headphones, what would be a good story?" I decided to go with the truth, and when I finally got through told him how I work all night, and my wife is sleeping when I get home. I told him that I can't listen to Jeff Kallaway in the morning, and he interrupted with "Dave, Dave Kallaway," to which I responded "See, I don't listen to him; I can't." I then went on to tell him that I am legally blind and use a speech synthesizer to read the screen to me, and using a small ear-bud to listen to the synthesizer and the headphones over the top I could listen to Dave while I read the New York Times.

I thought that maybe it didn't go very well, but when he played back my story on the air, it sounded pretty good to me. I wonder if he believed my story; every bit of it true.

I didn't win, but that's ok. I had some fun anyway.
